Exercises That Are Safe To Do When You Can’t Squat Due To Joint Pain
The squat is often heralded as the "king of lower body exercises," but for women over 40 experiencing midlife changes, knee joint cartilage thinning or hip alignment shifts can make traditional squatting painful or even counterproductive.
Fortunately, your muscles do not understand specific exercises; they only understand tension and load. There are numerous joint-friendly patterns that build incredible leg strength, stability, and bone density without compressing the knee caps or compressing the lumbar spine.
Glute Bridges & Hip Thrusts: By keeping your feet flat on the floor and lifting your pelvis, you achieve high hamstring and glute activation without putting shearing forces on your knees. It is an absolute staple of the Redefining Aging Method.
Step-Ups with Active Core Control: Stepping onto a low, stable platform shifts the emphasis to the posterior chain. When performed with a slight forward torso lean, it targets the gluteus maximus while keeping the knee joint angle wide and comfortable.
Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs): A pure hip-hinge movement that builds the entire back of the leg and protects the lower back. By focusing on pushing the hips backward rather than bending the knees, you completely bypass patellar tendon stress.
Remember, fitness is not about pushing through painful joint friction. It is about working around limitations to build longevity, resilience, and muscle mass safely.
